Searching the Collection

You can quickly and easily search articles in the collection with just a few words to find what you're looking for. You don't have to read the entire collection of articles--the Google search engine has already done that for you.

If you were curious about what articles were available relating to skirmishes in Franklin, Tennessee, in the year 1864, for example, you would search on skirmish franklin 1864, with a result of 16 articles. Searching only on skirmish brings up 1,280 articles--many more than you would want to read through. Even the search skirmish franklin brings up 72 results, which may be more than you want to hunt through.

Using the search method suggested above will help you to quickly and easily navigate the collection.

Bear in mind that you are searching through the language of the 1860s, which is not the same as the language in use today. You may have to use terms which are unfamiliar--you may wish to consult the Glossary as an aid to search language.
